I think we all remember the old NES controllers from our childhood. Matt from TunerTricks fame rewired the Apple Remote Control from my Apple TV to fit within the old controller housing. Nice!

Schmap!

About a year ago, I was contacted by Schmap! to use a photo of the Harbourfront Centre that I had taken during a trip to Toronto. To help celebrate the release of the new iPhone, I received an email from them telling me that they had taken Schmap! online, and that my photo would be included. Above is a "mock" picture.

iPhone 2.oh...

I am a fan of Apple products through and through. I have been using Macs for a while, and jump at the opportunity to make company purchases to keep up to date with the "latest and greatest" of Apple products. The new 3G iPhone was no different.

For weeks, my friends and I planned an outing on Friday morning to stand in line to await the open doors of at&t. We were even planning it down to the last details, such as should we all go in one car? What color iPhone? etc. It was a laborious process, but we figured it out, or so I thought.

This fiasco lasted a complete weekend for me, so I will break it down into a planner format:

Attempt #1: at&t wireless @ Atlantic Station - Atlanta, GA
Friday - July 11, 2007
5:00am - Wake up
5:30am - Shelli and I arrive at the at&t store in Atlantic Station. About 30 people in front of us already.
5:40am - Ryan and Matt roll up to wait in line as well.
8:00am - at&t doors open.
8:45am - Still waiting in line. Shelli needs to leave for work, so she's out of luck scoring an iPhone already.
10:00am - Finally at the front of the line. Heard that the store only got 50 iPhones. All the 16GB Black models are out. Already I am out of luck.
10:30am - Inside the store, waiting to "pre-order" for the next shipment of phones to arrive at the store.
11:00am - Still trying to "pre-order". Watching the clock as I have a 12:00pm work presentation.
11:15am - iPhone is pre-ordered and we leave the store. Ryan and Matt both have 8GB Black iPhones now, though unactivated due to the activation server acting up.

---

Attempt #2: Apple Store @ Perimeter Mall - Atlanta, GA
Friday - July 11, 2007
1:30pm - Following Mickey to the Perimeter Mall, we decide to check out the lines at the Apple store there. Lines are ridiculous, no doubt due to the "mandatory" activation process. We ditch the line and eat in the food court and split ways.

---

Attempt #3: Apple Store @ Lenox Square - Atlanta, GA
Friday - July 11, 2007
5:30pm - Thinking we could go check out the lines, and run errands at the same time, Shelli and I drive up to Lenox. Crazy lines again. We decide to run errands and eat at Hashiguchi Jr.
8:00pm - We decide to check out the line after eating and errands. Still crazy. Get a call from Mickey. He is at Perimeter again. We decide to head over and stand in line with him.

---

Attempt #4: Apple Store @ Perimeter Mall - Atlanta, GA
Friday - July 11, 2007
8:30pm - Though the line was less than it was during lunch, it is still crazy. We decide it's best to stay here and just tough it out.

Saturday - July 12, 2007
1:45am - We've been here for over hours in line now. We're all frustrated, and I have been up for nearly 24 hours straight now, about 1/2 of them standing in a line of sorts. Ridiculous!!!
2:00am - Our feet now step inside the Apple store. Amazing. But the rub is that we're now standing in a new line, inside the store. OMG!!!
2:15am - Tired of standing now... Apple employee announces that at&t has shut down the activation servers. Everyone has to leave. We receive vouchers to "cut" the line the following day, and have a phone reserved for each one of us. Still no iPhone in hand and we're forced to leave.

---

Attempt #5: Apple Store @ Perimeter Mall - Atlanta, GA
Saturday - July 12, 2007
10:00am - Shelli and I decide to just get the madness over and head back to Perimeter Mall. It's great to pass the line, and to know that there is a phone waiting for each of us inside the store. We see Mickey and family there on their way out. I try and get the new iPhone activated, but there are problems due to my account with at&t. Something about an IRU block due to some small business code on my service. I have no idea what it is, and try to have it removed. They can't remove it immediately. Shelli now acquires her iPhone. I am still without. We decide to go home.
8:00pm - Earlier I was told that I was going to have to wait for 4 hours or so ("could be shorter, could be longer" I was told) to have the IRU removed. I called to check the status. I was told it was removed. I am hesitant to believe it.

---

Attempt #6: Apple Store @ Perimeter Mall - Atlanta, GA
Sunday - July 13, 2007
1:00pm - After brunch with Matt and Nicole, we decide to head to the Apple store at Perimeter. Shelli finds her new iPhone, 1 day old, in a stream of rain water near the curb where we parked the car. She is devastated. All this work, and her new iPhone is now dead. Complete loss. I call AMEX on the way to Perimeter to see about their protection plan. They will cover the cost of the phone. She's still upset.
1:30pm - Walk into the store, jumping the line again, and find an employee to help me out. They get the phone that has been waiting 36 hours for me, and I am able to activate it. Finally!!! Shelli consults the employees about her dead phone. Nothing they can do. No hope in sight.
6:30pm - I arrive home from a few drinks to celebrate, and find Shelli's phone still dead. I take the hair dryer out and use it to help evaporate the condensation that still resides in her new iPhone. We let it run for a while.
7:15pm - We take the hair dryer away and cross our fingers. We depress the Power button and low and behold, the screen lights up with the Apple logo. We wait a minute more and her Home Screen appears. She is able to make calls, etc. We're in business!

Total Miles driven: 134.9 mi

Gyoza!

Shelli and I made gyoza for the first time tonight. We used a pork based recipe from my mom to create these Japanese dumplings, also known as pot-stickers. Growing up, I would eat these wonderful Japanese treats all the time. It was only a matter of time before I ventured into making these for myself. Now I just need to take after my dad and make the gyoza skins from scratch as well.

From Start to Finish - The Blue Crab Cooking Adventure

"I enjoy food."

This simple statement goes a tad bit beyond the obvious for many though. Born and raised in California, thanks to my parents, I was fortunate to grow up with many of the culinary greats at my disposal. Judy Rodgers and Alice Waters, chef/owners of Zuni Cafe and Chez Panisse respectively, were places I would eat on occasion, and grew to love over the years.

I have been reading the books of Michael Pollan recently, also of Bay Area fame. His books, The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food, bring back to light an old way of thinking when it comes to food. In short, know where it comes from, and what it takes to get to your table.

Those who know me have on one occasion or another been invited to eat at the dining table in my home, a mere 5 feet from my kitchen, a part of my house that I have come to know and love to spend time in. My appreciation for food as transformed from just the dining table of a restaurant, to the dining table in my home as well.

Currently I am on vacation with Shelli, a far ways from my home kitchen, but my sense of food of comes with me on this journey to Hilton Head Island, SC. Shelli had told me countless stories of her childhood, including memories of crabbing off a pier, using just a weight, chicken neck, and a line of string. She would spend hours on a neighbor's pier, reeling in crab after crab as they feasted on this simple diet of chicken neck. Little did they know they would be boiled hours later for her to eat. This adventure I wanted to try.

A couple of days ago we set off and went crabbing. We set up on a pier near our room with no such luck. Unfortunately hermit crabs don't count as a dinner feast. Today however, we set out across the Cross Island Parkway and talked our way onto the boat docks. It was a success. With no one else fishing the docks, a mere 10 feet stood between us and our dinner. We waited with anticipation and excitement as we set the crab basket out with it's chicken neck. Within 10 minutes we had our first crab. Spending about 1 1/2 hours there, we finally got 2 good sized crabs in our bucket and were on our way back to the hotel.

We used a simple method to cook the crabs. 2 bottles of beer, White Wine Vinegar, Lemon, Garlic, and Old Bay Seasoning. We waited for the mixture to come to a boil before getting our two friends into the pot, along with some fresh corn on the cob. 15 minutes later, and with the help of the oven for the asparagus, we had our dinner for the evening. The crab was quite tasty and rich in flavor. It is quite a bit of work getting all the meat out of the body, but with great respect to our friends who fed us, we left no meat wasted whatsoever. It was a great meal.

Much to Pollan's idea of knowing where your food comes from, I was glad (though a little sad at the same time) to know that the crabs we had for dinner were caught in SC, kept fresh in a bucket of brackish, and steamed in a combination of salt, garlic, lemon, etc. What an experience to know what it takes to cook and eat fresh crab from start to finish.

XHTML Strict, CSS, JavaScript Standards Compliant Scalable DropShadow

<a href="_images/news/news_20080505/" onclick="window.open(this.href, '_blank'); return false;"

Launch Demo

In working on the Phone Sex site, I came up with a new technique to apply drop shadows to objects on a webpage using Standards Compliant XHTML, CSS, and Javascript. The thing that was tricky was making it scalable, since that was one of the main technological feats of the site to begin with. Thus began the exploration...

What you see here is a demo of the final solution. What it enables you to do is to scale the browser window without "scaling" the shadow. The shadow will remain constant in "depth" no matter how large the "object" is.

The shadow is cut into a 2x2 grid. Each quadrant scales equally in size as the object takes more space in the browser window when scaled. The object that it is the shadow for then rests on a layer above the "shadow" and thus the scalable shadow is born.

For those interested in understanding better the way that this all works, please feel free to drop me a line, otherwise all the code is there, so like I had done when I first got into this business, "steal some sheep" and reverse engineer it.

Never Without just launched a new site for New York based photographer Phillip Toledano to accompany his new book, "Phone Sex", slated to launch come September by Twin Palms Press.

One of the interesting aspects to this site is the use of the technology we developed for Ryan Flynn's Big Ass Photo. Depending on how large the browser window is, the image will scale to fill the space necessary.

Following up on the post from the other day, I have decided to share with you the ad that Never Without did for Drew Lewis, which appears in the April issue of Peach. We were very excited to do this spread as it showcases a boutique in town that I resonate with. The style and clothes that they carry are cutting edge and wonderful designer labels. If you have a chance to stop in, I highly recommend it, as it's a welcome addition to Atlanta's sparse boutique scene.

New Albums Mid-February

I can't say that I have been doing a lot of music shopping lately... But I did stumble upon this album which I am excited about. Old, hometown skate hero, Tommy Guerrero, Ray Barbee, Matt Rodriguez, Doug Scharin, and Chuck Treece come together to create the BLKTOP PROJECT sound.

Frank "The Tank" Stamp

Thanks to my mom, I now have a stamp, inspired by the link from November 5, 2007.

Yelp on naoyawada.com

As a result of all my recent "yelping", I have decided to add a yelp/google maps widget to naoyawada.com which shows a visual for my most recent reviews.

Yelp!

Yelp! No, it's not a misspelling, it's an online city guide powered by the people of the city. I have a feeling that Yelp has been around for a little while now, but I'm just getting into it now. It's pretty fantastic given the alternative, the now not so great Citysearch.

Yelp functions as a result of the users on it. People sign up for an account, and begin Yelping. You can review anything from restaurants, shopping, nightlife, etc. Services are also reviewed, so you can get a sense for who to go to when you wanna get a teeth cleaning, etc.

I found this site as a result of Zip Realty, a site that allows you to see real estate listings online. When I saw that Zip Realty was using Yelp to help get their users acquainted with the neighborhoods, I figured it was a pretty good resource.

I began with a restaurant review of Sun in My Belly, one of my favorites in Atlanta. That lead to another on Floataway Cafe... Now I am up to 27 reviews. A lot of my "regulars" are on the list, and some "irregulars" I guess you can say. Either way, it's great to see what others think about your places, and what their reviews are. One of the best features is that you can sort by number of reviews, rather than the score. This comes in handy when you want to weed out the 5-star/1-review places.

One of the plusses about living in Atlanta is that we have a great Yelp representative here as well. Last Thursday, we attended a Yelp get together and met other "Yelpers". It was a blast to meet others with the same enthusiasm. To have a great online resource is one thing, but to bring it to the physical just raises the bar to another level. Citysearch should be shaking in its boots.

While the saying, "The clothes make the man", can fit my personality from time to time, I often find the revised version to work a little better for me. "The SHOES make the man."

* BTW don't even look for these on store.puma.com. They're not even there!

Scouring QBN from time to time pays off. Apparently I have a secret admirer. Dave Sedgwick of designbydave.co.uk wasn't what I expected though. Haha. Just kidding Dave. I know you don't ♥ me, it's Never Without that you love. :P

Goodbye at&t!

Today marks a huge leap in my life. I finally cut the landline cord. I have been using both a cell and a landline for some time now... Since I moved to Atlanta, I have had a landline to serve numerous purposes. Phone calls, DSL, and lastly my alarm system.

You know how they have conspiracies on certain topics? I thought there was something crazy about how alarm companies and phone companies are seemingly in bed together. Well I finally got tired of paying $45/month for a landline that served only one purpose... to call in case of an emergency. I finally called my security company and got the news on a product that served my needs.

Uplink basically created a box that acts as a cell phone, SMSing emergency messages to the main office, without the use of a hardline. Genius. In the past, it seemed to be not cost effective. Come to find out that it's only $6/month more than what I was already paying for the monitoring service. When I got news of that, one thing went through my mind... "GOODBYE AT&T!!!"

Finally helping to bridge the gap between my last love (Blackberry Curve) and the new fling, the iPhone.

I finally broke down at the beginning of December and copped an iPhone. It's quite lovely, despite its shortcomings. I got around to JailBreaking it before the last trip to SF, and it helps quite a bit on a 5 hour plane ride.

One thing I discovered was the iMapIdle app. That's reason enough to hack the phone... Helping to bridge the gap between PUSH and PULL email.

So while we were up in Lancaster, PA, my digi-cam broke... Like I always thought, the point and shoots are the new disposable camera. Anyway, despite my desire to go back to film, I am glad that Mickey furnished me with a new Canon SD750 for the holidays... It again allowed me to capture the Jenga time-lapses that I find so amusing.

Google Mobile Maps with My Location

Google unveiled the latest update to their mobile software lineup with Google Mobile Maps. While the application itself isn't anything new, the functionality of My Location brings a whole new level of usefulness to those without a GPS module in their mobiles, like myself. It tracks you down to a 1000m of your present location. Amazing!

I just bought The Bread Baker's Apprentice by Peter Reinhart as a result of the artisan bread making class I attended at The Cook's Warehouse. I've been told that it's the bible when it comes to bread making. I am working on a loaf of ciabatta right now. The book, being it a cookbook of "formulas", is amazingly easy to read, and very interesting at that.

Funambol - iPhone OTA syncing

While I am still not convinced on getting an iPhone (yet), I am glad to see someone is helping to bridge the differences between the Blackberry and iPhone syncing capabilities. It's not quite as useful still, but it's getting closer.

Funambol announced a service which will allow users to sync their contacts OTA (over the air) similar to that of a Blackberry device. That's one of the major gripes I had about the iPhone. Why, if you enter new information on a mobile device (especially one such as the iPhone), shouldn't information like contacts, calendars, etc, sync automatically over cellular networks? It just makes sense. Especially with a company like Apple who offers a .mac service which basically does the same thing, just over computers... Seems like a given to me, but I'm not Steve Jobs.

patchstick - follow-up

Oh goodness... The potential the some of the Apple products have, and how the company that I look to everyday hinders it.

The software version I have on the Apple TV is 1.1. Just one release above what I need to hack the hell out of it. Oh well. My dreams of Firefox and the addition of other widgets to the new set-top box are on hold until the fine folks at awkwardtv and appletvhacks update their patchstick hack; well either that or until I get the itch to really break open (physically) the box and hook up the hard drive to a laptop to get it reconfigured... We'll see which comes first.

patchstick

So I had been wrestling with the thought of purchasing a (soon to be defunct) Mac Mini or an Apple TV. Well Mickey answered my dilema on my birthday with the gift of an Apple TV.

The problem main problem that I had with either choice was that each product had it's pros and cons. Well I think that gap which separates the two may be closing in with the introduction of patchstick.

One of the things I wanted on the Apple TV was a web browser. Well with patchstick opening up the SSH on the set top box, I will (thanks to the brains behind appletvhacks and awkwardtv) be able to run Firefox, as well as some other widgets using the Apple TV.

	More to come...

MySQL PHP Export to Excel .xls

I was asked by a Never Without client of ours to create an admin section to a site that would enable a user to download an Excel spreadsheet of a MySQL database.

I have created a PHP file that, when edited to suit your host, username, password, and table, will parse the information of a specific MySQL table that you define into an Excel file that will automatically download to your desktop.

The end file will include column headers for the table, as well as the data.

	Test the script
Download the script

In conjunction with TG Madison, Never Without has launched a new site for Lanier Parking. A hybrid between XHTML, CSS, Flash, AS, XML, PHP, MySQL, and a whole bunch of other things...

Leopard - Apple's botched OS

I have always looked forward to all the Mac OS releases that have come in the past, and Leopard was no different. But for the first time, it seems like it's been a disappointment. It's not that the UI isn't amazing, but the fact that it's insanely buggy. I started yesterday, initially installing it on my MacBook Pro. Once that installation finished, I began the same process on my MacPro. While the install on the laptop went fairly smooth, the tower didn't have quite the same results. My login password wasn't accepted, and once I was able to bypass that issue, I come to find out the privileges on my account have been demoted from Admin to Standard. Not sure what that's all about. There seems to be quite a ruckus on the Apple Support site too. My goodness. What ever happened to Mac being the reliable, easy-going choice of computers...

Twenty-Ten

Today I am twenty-ten (aka 30). I figured this would be quite an appropriate day to make my mark on the internet with a new site. I have decided to start fresh with a clean slate, use some new tools I have learned over the years, and give myself a facelift. As time allows, I will be adding back in some old favorites of people, especially the code and work I have massed together over the years (especially since I myself refer to them from time to time.

I guess I'll go over the site now... It's become more of a blog than anything else. I hunted around looking for a pre-built solution, but as I usually do, I took this opportunity and created my own custom system which suited my needs best. I can't stand to read a manual, and I don't have time to tinker with someone else's funny code. Some additions you see here now are the following:

Article Categories - Personal, Professional, Photography and Music

Unique article URLs

RSS Feed

Comments

I have gotten rid of the archiving of posts. No more hunting back month by month for me to see which restaurant it was in NY that ate at. Instead I have every post listing on the left side. Click on the title and you'll see your story. Nice and simple, just the way I like the web to be.

Click on a category, and you'll see the entries that belong to that category light up. It helps to organize content that way.

Want to send someone the URL of the article I wrote about on a script for exporting MySQL Databases as an excel file? Now you have that option. Just copy the URL from your browser window and email away.

RSS Feeds... Well I don't have an excuse for not having one since it's all driven by a MySQL Database anyway...

Lastly comments... Well I may have to remove them sooner or later, but in the meantime, it's a nice way for people who see these things to comment away as they wish.

I hope everyone enjoys the new site. I of course plan on updating it's functionality more and more as I have time, but here's the beginning to the next years in my life.
